Kanshi Ram (1934-2006) was an Indian politician and social reformer who is best known for founding the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), a political party that represents the interests of Dalits, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, and religious minorities in India.
Kanshi Ram was born in Punjab in a family of Chamars, a Dalit community. He faced discrimination and oppression from a young age and was drawn to the ideology of B.R. Ambedkar, a Dalit leader and social reformer. Kanshi Ram worked as a clerk in various government departments before dedicating himself to the cause of social reform.
In 1984, Kanshi Ram founded the BSP, which quickly gained popularity among Dalits and other marginalized communities in India. The party's ideology was based on the principles of social justice, equality, and empowerment of the oppressed sections of society.
Under Kanshi Ram's leadership, the BSP became a major political force in India, particularly in the state of Uttar Pradesh. In 1995, the party formed a government in Uttar Pradesh with Mayawati as the Chief Minister, making her the first Dalit woman to hold such a high office in India.
